1965 Caravan of Stars - Unit 1

Dick Clark's Caravan was heavily booked throughout 1965 with more shows planned than ever before.  They also featured something no other Caravan had offered - British acts.  Although Clark was vocal about American concert promoters paying way too much money to British Invasion artists in 1964, even he had to knuckle under to the demand for British artists this year.  Consequently, Clark made contract offers to a number of groups.  The first to accept was the Zombies.  However visa issues delayed their arrival so this unit began shows on April 15 and the Zombies didn't join for the first 10 shows.  A week later a second unit hit the road with Herman's Hermits headlining.  These two units criss-crossed the country and even shared one date.  Today's blog follows Unit 1 with the Zombies.

    The Zombies say that Dee Dee Sharp was thrown off the tour at some point, after she had threatened Mel Carter with a gun (her own, apparently).

      This may have been around the time Dee Dee Sharp was engaged to Cassius Clay, who later became Mohammad Ali.

      I also recently read that Dee Dee Sharp admitted to slapping Diana Ross for flirting with her soon to be husband, Kenny Gamble. Don't mess with Dee Dee!

    Thank you for taking the time to compile all of this awesome information! This spring I spent some time with Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone of The Zombies and I asked them if their paths had ever crossed with any members of Chicago. They immediately began discussing the Dick Clark tour with Terry Kath, Danny Seraphine and Walt Parazaider. Later in the summer I met Danny and he also remembered meeting The Zombies. Thank you for putting dates and additional information to these wonderful stories!

    I have a Caravan of Stars booklet from a concert, probably in Charlotte NC and it lists: Lou Christie, Mitch Ryder, Keith Allison, The Happenings, The Capitols, The Strangeloves, The Thomas Group, Cash McCall, and Dean Parrish. What year would this line up have occurred??

    Whatever the yr,65 or ? I don't find mention of the show at Union University, Jackson TN. With Tommy Roe, Tony Joe White, Billy Joe Royal and I think Neil Diamond. Three of those acts being from the south were obviously targeted for this area. Any info on the show. Those are the only big names I remember as I was about 13 then
