1959 Caravan of Stars - Update II

UPDATE - Here is a combined update for the Fall 1959 Caravan.  still looking for a few dates to make it complete.

With such overwhelming success, Clark engaged GAC to book a tour headlined by Paul Anka and also starring Lloyd Price, Annette Funicello, Duane Eddy, Jimmy Clanton, Laverne Baker, Coasters, Drifters, Skyliners, Bobby Rydell, and Phil Phillips. Arthur Dover was hired as the MC for shows where Clark did not appear. Irving Feld was the tour's promoter.

No sooner did GAC book a full tour from September 18 through November 8 with the Caravan's debut in Baltimore than problems arose.  The Boston Garden, site of the Caravan's second show was being used for a hockey game earlier in the afternoon and GAC decided that they didn't want to go through with the show under those circumstances.  Instead, Tim Gale of GAC booked a replacement show in Scranton, PA.  Boston was a lucrative stop for any rock 'n roll show in the 1950s so the loss was not looked upon as a good omen.

The Caravan gains its first negative notoriety when midway through the show, fights break out amongst the 12,000 plus audience and police moved in to break up the melee.  In all, 49 men were arrested ranging in age from 17 to 50 for disturbing the peace and public drunkeness.  Although Dick Clark was not at the show, his association with the show drew lots of press and he held a news conference in New York to defend the Caravan.  He denied that the performers were responsible for what happened and said, "What happened was certainly unfortunate, but it only reflects the attitude of a few of the thousands of people there."

10/31/59 Arena, Milwaukee, WI

Talk about a short show!

Today's post is about Herman's Hermits first U.S. concert.  You probably haven't heard that much about it because it lasted all of two songs!  The show took place April 16, 1965 at Manville High School, Manville, NJ.  Gene Kaye, disc jockey at WEAB in Allentown, PA hosted concerts in Manville, NJ in the 1960s and had signed the Hermits for a modest fee to perform at Manville High School.  As the date for the show neared, the band's management tried to get out of the contract since their first American single, "I'm Into Something Good" was skyrocketing up the charts and their appearance fee had grown substantially.  Kaye demanded that the band honor their contract and they reluctantly did so.

But as they mounted the stage, the crowd of 2,000 surged forward.  Police and school officials attempted to push them back and the Hermits did manage to get through two songs before the screaming girls burst through the meager security and took the stage grabbing for Peter Noone and any other Hermit they could get their hands on.  Since they weren't all that thrilled about the show to begin with, the band ran off stage and into waiting cars to head towards a more lucrative booking in Bethlehem, PA.  That show took place at the Bandstand, Notre Dame High School.  The reaction was just as volatile as the crowd there also took the stage and and took the band's equipment as souvenirs.

A few days later, Herman and the Hermits are aboard a bus touring the country as part of Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars and by August, they are headlining the Rose Bowl in front of 60,000 fans!

1966 Caravan of Stars - Winter Tour

The Winter Tour of 1966 featured the Yardbirds at a crucial period of their career.  Jimmy Page had just joined on bass and Jeff Beck was just about to jump out of the group.  Added to Caravan veterans Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Brian Hyland and Sam the Sham, it was an interesting mix of music and perhaps the last great Caravan of Stars tour.
