Back to the Dick Clark Package Tours and the year 1966. Gary Lewis and the Playboys headlined the first "Where the Action Is" tour along with show regulars Paul Revere and the Raiders, Steve Alaimo, Linda Scott and the Knickerbockers. There wasn't that much to differentiate between the Caravans and these tours except that the bill was filled out with the TV show regulars instead of one-hit wonders at the bottom of the bill. This tour was reported to have begun on April 5 but I haven't found the first several dates.

What a pleasant surprise to come upon this website! I attended the show in Louisville on April 30,1966. I was just two months shy of ten at the time, and it was my first rock concert. My mother ended up giving Mark Lindsay and two of the Knickerbockers a ride to the Fairgrounds after they missed their bus at the Holiday Inn on Second Street. All the kids sat on top of each other in the back seat to make room.
ReplyDeleteGreat story! Boy, times have changed, haven't they? Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI went to this concert in 1966 in Biloxi, MS. But the venue isn't listed here. Was there also a Fall tour that year?
ReplyDeleteI was there too. I remember it being Biloxi High School. Outside in the football stadium.
DeleteI was there also in the stadium and o thought the Turtles also played. I was 14 at the time.
DeleteApril 23, 1966, long island arena, commack, rock and roll show....any ideas ?.....still have ticket !
ReplyDeleteI was at this concert too. My 1st concert, my older brother had to take me because our parents were not going to home that night. Dont remember much I was 9 at the time. But to this day Ive been rocking ever since.

ReplyDeleteThis is a video segment for the "Where The Action Is" TV show that shows a behind-the-scene look at that 1966 "Where The Action Is" Spring Tour with Paul Revere & the Raiders during their 5/2/66 UC Fieldhouse Armory, Cincinnati, OH concert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yE-r0oCjfgE
ReplyDeletety for that!
DeleteI attended the stop in New Orleans in 1966 and remember Sam the Sham and the Pharohs being on the bill, mainly because my sister and I were under the stands when they arrived in thier limo. Also Fang of Paul Revere and the Raiders running and sliding on stage which pulled his amp over!
ReplyDeleteI attended the show in Madison, Wisconsin but, I'm sure Billy Joe Royal wasn't on the bill that night. This was my second concert. The first concert I ever attended was the Byrd's with the New Colony Six at the same venue, the Orpheum Theater a few months earlier. I had turned 12 years old in October 1965.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody remember a band called Spontaneous Generation as part of a Paul Revere and the Raiders show in Atlanta?
ReplyDeleteSaw this one too (Magnolia, AR), pushing 9 years old. Again my mother and her friends took me and my brother.
ReplyDeleteTour dates are listed in the book "Where The Action Was: On the Inside of the Evolution of Rock 'n' Roll" by Mark "Hoss" Amans (pages 84-85). Link: https://books.google.com/books?id=ANLFjcaoTQsC&source=gbs_navlinks_s
ReplyDeleteI've searched a lot and have not found listed the Where the Action Is July 12th 1966 show at Madison county coliseum in Huntsville, Alabama or the Dick Clark's Happening 67 tour on August 9th 1967 at the same venue. Anybody out there that can confirm who played those shows?
DeleteThanks, JC
How can I find out when the April 11th show in San Antonio aired?
ReplyDeleteI like to find out about the Clay Cole Rock and Roll show, at the Commack Arena, Long Island, NY 1960
ReplyDeleteany information pertaining to the show
like Posters, list of artist performing, promotional newspaper write ups, excetra!
I would appreciate any information
Respectfully,

There is a Spring show missing from this listing, which was held at The Memorial Field House, in Huntington, WV, and which I attended with my brother. I was only 12, at the time, so my guesstimation of the date is early May of '66. This guess is based on the travel path of the shows, and the particular line-up for that edition of the "Where The Action Is" tour; Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Billy Joe Royal, and The Viceroys. Of those acts, I am positive, although Steve Aliamo and Linda Scott may have appeared as co-hosts. Anyone with corroborating anecdotes or other facts, which would help to nail down the exact date, could solve a 53-year old mystery for this guy.
ReplyDeleteI went to the Action show in Jackson Mississippi. It was my first live concert. Very exciting for a 15 yr old. However I can't remember the date.
