1966 Caravan of Stars - Winter Tour

The Winter Tour of 1966 featured the Yardbirds at a crucial period of their career.  Jimmy Page had just joined on bass and Jeff Beck was just about to jump out of the group.  Added to Caravan veterans Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Brian Hyland and Sam the Sham, it was an interesting mix of music and perhaps the last great Caravan of Stars tour.

  1. They did play Little Rock at Barton Coliseum. I have Polaroid Swinger pics of Keith Relf singing, Jimmy Page playing on right side of stage, bass drum had sticker saying "protected by Batman". Also pics of Gary Lewis playing white Fender (Telecaster, I think), and Sam the Sham.

  2. I saw this lineup at the Coliseum in Alexandria, Louisiana during this tour. I didn't see it listed, but it was actually at this stop that Jeff Beck disappeared from the tour and Jimmy Page took over as lead guitar. I remember it so well because I was in a band at the time, and the Yardbirds were our heroes. To the point that several of us used fake press passes to attend the press conference at the Holiday Inn, where the Yardbirds announced the new lineup.

  3. I was at that concert at the Rapides Parrish Coliseum in Alexandria, LA. I was 16 and living with my parents at England Air Force base. I could not find that listed either but I think it was late October of 1966. I remember hearing some guys sitting next to me talking about Jeff Beck not being there.

    1. Small world. My bandmates and I were astounded that Jimmy Page, who we knew only as a bass player, could handle the rather challenging lead work. Of course, we didn't know that he'd been a session musician for years.

  4. I know for a fact that Paul and Paula were on the Caravan of Stars tour at some point but I don't know the dates.
